SOUTHERN ROSE
SOUTHERN HEART

Acceptability: 3 out of 4
SOUTHERN HEART is a movie with a big heart----a winsome tale of a small
southern community. The movie starts with Collin Jacobs (Peter DeLuise) being
called into his father's office in Manhattan to be sent to Northern Alabama
with his partner, Miss Waters (Victoria Galen), to acquire 800 acres of land
for their strip mining operations. Clearly, Collin Jacobs is on thin ice with
his father and must prove himself in this acquisition.
When they get to Alabama, Miss Waters is upset by how backward the community
is. They don't even have bottled water, she is told. Collin later finds out
that they have the pure God-given water. Collin is intrigued with the
townspeople. He senses that, behind the different accents and regional
characters, are people of substance. While Miss Waters mopes around the hotel
room, Jacobs goes out to find the property. He finds a camp for disadvantaged
children, which is full of love and compassion.
Camp Riverview is run by Tommy Owen (Jamie Hendrix Collins) and her friend,
Christie (Emily Carpenter). Collin is immediately smitten with Tommy, a
vivacious Southern woman who is full of grace. But, of course, there is culture
clash. He is Jewish, she is Christian. He comes to build a strip mine; she
loves God's beautiful garden.
SOUTHERN HEART is a small movie. It proceeds at a very determined, gracious
pace. It is rescued from the dustbin of small, low-budget, first time films by
the acting of Jamie Hendrix Collins who portrays Tommy Owen. She has a gift,
which comes into full bloom in this wonderful movie. However, she is not a
Hollywood starlet. In fact, she seems very un-Hollywood. Once she enters the
movie, all the other actors become galvanized and everything starts to take
off, leaving to a satisfying, poignant conclusion. There are many biblical
allegories in this movie. There is an outright presentation of Jesus Christ and
the Church. There is great love for Southern culture, hospitality and God's
creation. Hopefully, somebody will discover this rose and all involved in this
project will be blessed. But, then again, it might just be like the town of
Mentone itself in the movie---a garden to be found in an unlikely place, off
the beaten path.
