After finishing principal photography, Jamie was hospitalized because of the
seizures and with the early warning signs of a stroke. After many tests, the
attending physician, Dr. Teresa Allen of Montgomery, found that many of her
organs were strained, she had severe reactive hypoglycemia together with a
thyroid condition which had been brought on by a previous lead, nickel and
striatum poisoning. In other words, her immune system was completely shutting
down. However, they did tell her that she had caught it in time and with
medication and an altered diet, she should be fine within six months to a year.
They asked her to take some time off and concentrate on restoring her health.
Of course, as Jamie often said, "a part of good health is living out your
dreams". The problem was, she was due in New York to begin post-production
within a week. There was no one else to see the project through. So guess what
she did? She promised to take good care of herself and went to New York.
On January 1, 1998, against the advice of her family and friends, Jamie arrived
in New York. New York City can be intimidating enough for someone in good
health, but for an Alabama farm girl with the health problems that she had, she
demonstrated the utmost courage by pressing on to complete the project. Even
with the ongoing health issues, for which she is still under a physician's
care, she remained in New York throughout the process intimately involved in
all aspects of post-production including writing and performing several
selections for the musical score. Even more remarkable than that, while in New
York, she became very involved in working with the homeless of New York City.
In spite of her health, she yearned for the opportunity to assist those who
were less fortunate.
Despite the difficulties that await anyone who elects to produce a film, these
young women have produced a heartwarming romantic comedy that is not only
inspiring, but also has the broad based appeal that few independent films do.
Shot on 35mm in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, this film is filled
with humor and romance set against a backdrop of some serious human issues.
Jamie Hendrix Collins and Emily Carpenter have proved once again that dreams do
come true, even the impossible ones.
