They established an Alabama limited liability company, The Isaac Group, L.L.C.,
and formed a limited partnership whereby they began the painstaking task of
raising the necessary funds to begin production. One can only be imagine the
struggle that they faced being first-time filmmakers attempting to raise money
for a movie project in the state of Alabama. However, by August, 1997, they
were well on their way. Jamie literally moved to Mentone, Alabama, in August to
complete all the pre-production work as well as secure the assistance of the
town and its people. While doing all of this, they secured the services of
Peter DeLuise (21 JumpStreet, SeaQuest) for the lead role. The amount of work
involved cannot be adequately articulated. Literally, Jamie and Emily worked
night and day without ceasing in order that this dream would come to fruition.
In early September (1997), weeks before filming was to begin, Jamie became very
ill experiencing violent seizures that would hit her without notice. Even
though she was extremely concerned, Jamie refused to stop for fear that she
would be told that she had a life threatening condition which would force her
to quit. She decided that she would see the project to its end and only then
would she go in for medical tests. If that were not enough, immediately after
the fund raising efforts had begun in earnest, Emily discovered that she and
her husband were expecting their second (2nd) child. However, in light of all
of this, on October 17, 1997, as they had steadfastly proclaimed, the cameras
began to roll and "Southern Heart" was underway. Despite the continuing
physical complications associated with Jamie's condition (on one day during
filming, an ambulance was called for Jamie because her seizures had become
extremely violent) and those inherent with Emily's pregnancy, Jamie and Emily
never missed a day, never missed a line and never missed a cue. Please
remember, they were not only acting, they were also the writers and producers.
Their days started before everyone else and ended long after the cast and crew
had broke the set. So, this first time film production was being spearheaded by
two (2) women, one of which was pregnant and the other having seizures.
However, the production ended on schedule and under budget.
